Biography:
Misfit Mod is Sarah Kelleher, a New Zealand born singer and producer, currently residing in the UK. A talented sound engineer and audio instructor, Sarah has spent the last few years self-producing her debut album, Islands & Islands, due to be released on the New York label, Stars & Letters, this coming July, 2012.
Without a doubt, the first thing you’ll notice about Misfit Mod is Sarah’s unforgettable and hypnotic voice. Full of understated assurance and effortless in the best possible sense, it is a voice as unique and as recognizably hers as that of Tom York, Bon Iver, or Kim Gordon. One moment soothing and sultry, another icily pellucid, Sarah’s voice even inspired the veteran host of BBC Introducing, Tom Robinson, to confess to getting goosebumps on-air whilst listening to her song “Sugar C.”
Stylistically, Misfit Mod’s music is often referred to as “dream-like” or “minimalist”—and that it is—but Sarah’s carefully chosen layers of electronic sounds also bloom into rich and powerful washes of analog warmth and digital glow. From the comfortable and chocolatey ‘Sugar C.’, through the mantra-like ‘Cars(I)’ and ‘Valleys,’ to the haunted and breathy ‘Ghost Me,’ Islands & Islands is an album of subtle variety, enormous beauty, and a revelation on just how much sonic and emotional depth can still be achieved within the bounds of popular music.
