Biography:
The Enright House is Mark Roberts, formerly based in Christchurch, New Zealand, now living in New York. The press have described The Enright House as anything from “pop as pop should be” to “skittery percussion, ethereal drones with metallic resonances, and disturbingly atmospheric sounds…”. Think Death Cab For Cutie meets Mogwai. Sigur Ros meets Pinback. Philip Glass meets a distortion pedal. Poetry meets numbers. Up meets down. Light meets the drain-pipe.
Despite Roberts’ German and American origins, The Enright House was largely active in New Zealand, where, from 2004 to 2009, Roberts was pursuing a masters degree in philosophy and art, as well as a certificate in audio production. The Enright House made its debut release in 2006 with the extended play Broken Hands, issued as part of A Low Hum’s monthly magazine, which routinely included compilations and unreleased material by New Zealand artists. In 2007, Roberts released his first full-length studio album A Maze and Amazement on A Low Hum’s new label, garnering substantial press and radio attention in New Zealand, and in the following years released an additional three EPs, various singles, remixes, collaborations, a split 7″, and four music videos.
Whilst in New Zealand, The Enright House performed in various formats—from solo performances to full bands—with the latter usually including long-term live collaborators, Evan Schaare (synths), Simon Gemmill (drums/percussion), and Thomas Lambert (guitar). After three New Zealand tours in 2006, 2007, and 2008, The Enright House showcased at 2009′s SXSW, followed by a 10-week US-tour, beginning in February 2009 and commencing in May of the same year. After the tour was over, Roberts decided to stay in the United States, moved to New York, and in early 2011 announced that he was retiring The Enright House to focus on his new project, We Are Temporary.
